Camera ObscuraThis image shows how the camera obscura works, the top of the object travels through the bottom of the hole and appears on the wall at point B. The same happens with the bottom of the object, making the object appear upside down. This is because light travels in straight lines.

This is an example of a camera obscura with a mirror inside so the photographer could see the image reflected. This meant he could lay down paper on it to trace the image. Very smart. |
Own Camera Obscura1. Cut the top of a cardboard tube and tape some grease proof paper over the cut.
2. Cover the cut piece of tube with tin foil and tape together. 3. Place the short tube over the large tube(at the grease proof paper side) and tape tightly shut. When you look through the base of the tube, you will see the upside down image of whatever your looking at. |
This is the image you will see when you look out of our class window!
More complicated versions can be made, but unfortunately we didn't get around to making that. It's essentially the same but instead of one tube, the grease proof paper lining would be one whole tube that fits in the tube with tape over the top and the pin hole. This enables you to focus the image your seeing as the more simple tube is usually out of focus. |
